Excessive Heat Warning and Ozone Advisory

Excessive Heat Warning and Ozone Advisory

Los Angeles is expecting a long period of extreme heat from Wednesday at 11am through at least Monday at 8pm. Temperatures could reach up to 112 degrees in the San Fernando Valley and up to 105 degrees in downtown Los Angeles and the LA basin. This heat wave will also impact air quality, and smog will reach unsafe levels in many parts of the City. Since these extremely high temperatures and bad air quality will continue for many days in a row, it’s very important to be proactive and make sure you and your community have a plan to stay safe during extreme heat.

BE PERSONALLY PREPARED:
Keep cool by resting in shady areas or buildings with air conditioning and drinking plenty of water. If you do not live in an air-conditioned building, you can take refuge from the heat at a public library, recreation facility, senior center or other public air-conditioned building near you. You may call 311 to identify the cooling centers closest to you, or visit https://ready.lacounty.gov/heat/ to see a map of cooling center locations, and hours of operation (additional centers being added). Many pools and splash pads at your local Recreation and Parks locations will be available over the holiday weekend- you can find their hours of operation and locations by visiting the Daily Pool Status Website.

HELP YOUR COMMUNITY PREPARE:
Check up on relatives and neighbors, especially if they have pre-existing health conditions or are sensitive to heat. Let them know the heat is coming and the ways to stay safe. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Additional information about staying safe during extreme heat, and a list of LA City cooling centers that will be operational during the Labor Day weekend are available at www.emergency.lacity.org/heat.

IF YOU MUST BE OUTSIDE:
Take extra precautions if you work, exercise, or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening, or until this period of extreme heat is over. See the image below as a guide to help you recognise f signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, OSHA recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments and staying hydrated. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. Employers must provide access to sufficient water.
Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency- Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location, and then immediately call 911. Non-emergency heat-related information can be found by calling 311.

Free Food Resources for Californians

Free Food Resources for Californians

Dear friends,

On behalf of Controller Ron Galperin, the Community Engagement team is proud to share our office’s updated Free Food in California map! Please click here to learn more about how this essential resource came to be.

L.A. Controller Ron Galperin just released this new statewide map of free food resources available to Californians. This is the only resource of its kind in California and shows more than 1,400 food banks, food pantries, emergency distribution centers, and other community resources providing free access to food across the state.

How to use the Free Food in California Map:
Users can find resources by typing their address into the search bar and choosing a search radius, or by clicking on a location near them on the map. Each dot on the map indicates the location of a separate resource site.

Users can click on a dot to view additional information including the name, address, and contact information. We recommend that anyone seeking assistance contact prospective sites before visiting to confirm hours and eligibility. Some locations may request that community members bring photo identification or other supporting documents when they visit.

Please reach out if you have any questions or feedback on the maps. Thank you as always for your engagement with the Controller’s office!
